I’m a little puzzled by other reviews saying that it won’t extend to your waist. I’m 6’1″ and I have to extend the strap all the way out to get it as low as I’d like, but I’d expect that’s approaching the limit of the product’s design anyway. It’s shipped with the buckle retracted up onto the shoulder pad inside one of the velcro keepers – if you can’t get the strap long enough, undo the velcro to allow the buckle to extend all the way to the quick release. I posted some user pictures above of how I carry the bag and how low it will go. Please pay no mind to the old fat guy behind the curtain. There are some cheaper alternatives out there and I have no experience with how those compare, but they’d have to be pretty spectacular to measure up to the Maxpedition. My only complaint, and not enough to lose a star, is that it’s VERY stiff when new, and I hope that continued carry will help it break in and become a little more comfortable. I purchased this bag at my local law enforcement supplier when they had a big Labor Day sale, but Amazon’s price is just as good, with a much bigger selection of colors so I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it on Amazon either.

This pack is extremely well made and sturdy. Multiple pockets, the strap is long enough to adjust it to fit comfortably, it can just be slung over your shoulder or fastened more securely by also using the waist strap. On the top flap is an area about 2×6 inches with the fuzzy side of velcro allowing for attaching other items. Roomy enough to replace most day packs and excellent for travel.

There are more than a few outfits selling clones of the Maxpedition packs, but none that I’ve seen even come close in quality. I have a $20 clone I bought at a local store that’s made of a much lighter material. The rear (hidden) compartment on the clone is backed with mesh- anything you stick in there is going to come tumbling out. Not so with the real Fatboy. I have three Maxpedition packs- two different-sized Versipacks and a Noatak sling pack- and at least one gets used every day. The Noatak is a fantastic bicycling pack, the Jumbo is great for day hikes, hunting and fishing (an ultralight camper could probably live out of it) and the Fatboy is the perfect bag for around town and short hikes. Functionally, I suppose it’s a “man purse”- but there’s nothing purse-like about it. It looks, and is, 100% functional.

Excellent product! All the reviews found online were right. No exaggeration, not an undeserved praise. Every part of the Maxpedition Fatboy Versipack serves a purpose and is well placed. Very anatomical, you soon forget you have it on, since it’s cushioned exactly where it has to be. I use it for its CCW capabilities with a medium frame S/A, and it is, by far, the best system I’ve tried, for concealability, ease of reach and deployment, and comfort. Bye-bye untucked loose shirts, self-consciousness when sitting down or standing up, and uncomfortable time while sitting down. Stay away from chicom imitations, not on the same league.
